Being Malaysian is to be broke at at least some point in your life (unless you were born into a super rich family, then this isn’t for you).
Having endured living paycheque to paycheque, many Malaysians know how it feels to really want to eat something only to not be able to afford it.
One Malaysian took to the pel calico lover Twitter page to anonymously share how they sat in their car for an hour while wondering if they should buy the waffle they were insanely craving, because the waffle might cause them to be unable to afford food the next day.
They wrote, “When was the broke-est you’ve been? Mine’s this. I had set up a marriage fund and after over a year, I had to stop as I couldn’t commit. The allocated amount in the fund, I was forced to use to cover emergency expenses at home. I was disappointed because I didn’t get to continue preparing for marriage.”
“And just yesterday, I felt the urge to have a waffle so after I filled petrol for my car, I drove to a local mall in my area and I parked my car. It took me about 5 minutes to think of whether I really wanted to eat a waffle or if I just wanted to chew on something. It turns out I really wanted to eat one (waffle).”
But, they weren’t done thinking about it.
“But that 5 minutes of thinking became 10, 10 became 30 and I ended up sitting in my car for an hour. That’s when I realised, how pathetic is my life right now. I only want to get a waffle and I can’t afford it because if I did get the waffle, I might not have enough funds for my daily meals the next day. That’s why I sat in the car how an hour, overthinking about a waffle. Until I really pity myself.”
“I’m thankful that I have a job and get a salary to continue paying for what I need, but that’s the thing, to survive the coming days until the next payday is painful. Until what I eat, I have to ration. I pick a timing to eat until I’m full so that I don’t think about eating again. I think the phase that I’m in right now is the most challenging by far,” they added.
We genuinely hope that life gets better for them and that they’ll then be able to afford all the waffles they want.
