A Malaysian man almost lost over RM840 to a scammer after clicking on a link sent via SMS that stated that his toll payment of RM12.87 had not gone through, and to make the payment online to avoid law enforcement action.
According to a report by China Press, the man received the SMS from a 15888 number claiming to be from the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT) of the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM).

“Unsuccessful toll payment recorded for your vehicle. Please arrange prompt settlement to avoid enforcement action,” the text read, accompanied by a link to perform payment.
The man proceeded to click on the link and entered his banking details to make the payment. However, 3 minutes later, he received a notification from the bank regarding a transaction of RM846.37.

Thankfully, the bank’s system had flagged and intercepted the transaction and prevented any losses.

The man is thankful that he didn’t experience any losses but believes that the scam will continue to target others, and is urging the general public to be vigilant and avoid clicking on payment links sent by unknown sources.
