There are many people out there who are earning high salaries due to their skills and hard work.
But what if we tell you, that isn’t always the case.
The MalaysianPAYGAP Facebook page recently shared an entry by a 31-year-old Malaysian man who is working as an engineer manager in Singapore. And while he can earn up to SGD 12,000 (RM41,000), he has admitted in his entry that he doesn’t know a what he is doing despite working in the company for 10 years now.
He started off by explaining that the engineers he manages are an average of 50-year-old (much older and experienced than him) and they even have children his age.
“Here’s the thing, despite leading an engineering team and expected to be an expert while drawing high pay, I HAVE NOT A SINGLE CLUE ABOUT MY JOB.”
“Yes, I don’t code, I only have a basic understanding of CI/CD, release and other tech stuff. I even need to Google to use a basic Jira filter,” he wrote.
So, you must be wondering, how does he complete his work everyday? Well, he fakes it till he makes it.
“I find myself pretty good at making others think I’m an expert despite knowing nothing. I’m good at talking my way out of things, good at making well-planned roadmaps that business thinks are masterplans – yet it never works. I’m good at convincing my staff that I know what they are talking about, also good at making small things sound great to my boss and finally, I always act busy.”
“In short, I think I’m a conman.”
He also often times hires niche experts to come in on a contract basis for implementation jobs
“Yes, I pay that contractor 20% to 30% higher, he gets the job done, I get the credit and that’s how I climb without knowing anything,” he explained.
The Malaysian man ultimately admitted that he doesn’t like how he earns without actually doing anything useful.
“To close this, I don’t have much advise other than don’t be like me. I have zero interest in my work, zero concreate skills other than to maybe talk c*ck. I also am not sure how long I can play the system. Despite earning on the higher end, even for Singapore’s level, I don’t feel much satisfaction in seeing others write codes while I just pretend,” he added.
