Just like any fruit lover, those who adore durians will not only know the best season to shop for this delicious fruit (to some!). But while the time of the year also denotes when it would be the best to stock up on this king of fruits, deciding which seller to purchase durians from is also crucial to get the juiciest and most delectable piece.
A recent TikTok video by Malaysian content creator Nash Bhullar has been making waves online after the food influencer gave his opinion on what kind of durian sellers the public should not buy the fruit from. Sharing the clip to his page @thepapanash, Bhullar simply stated that if a durian seller hits the durian with a blunt object before cutting into it, one should not buy it.
“I learnt this from my father. You never, ever let them bang the durian. You know what they’re actually doing? They are smashing the pulp inside. When they cut it open, it will be softer than it actually is,” said Bhullar in the clip.
Providing context behind his tip, Bhullar mentioned that he regards this as the oldest trick in the book, and something many people don’t know about. Towards the end of the clip, the seller did have to resort to using a knife to open the durian, as it seemed really tough to crack.
“I’ve been eating durian for close to 50 years and that’s not a good durian at all. It’s not ripe,” said Bhullar at the end of the video.
Receiving a plethora of responses online, many people had diverging thoughts on the matter. A few users opined that the seller was actually hitting the durian repeatedly to dent the thorns, so he would not hurt his hands when opening it.
“Worked at my uncle’s durian farm here. Usually knocking the durian like that is done to loosen its insides and to make it easier to take out,” wrote one user.
However, multiple others believed the exact opposite, agreeing with Bhullar on the matter that a ripe durian would not require that much effort to open.
“The durian was not ripe yet. A ripe durian is easy to open, and when it is whacked, the pulp inside is triggered to ferment. Therefore, it would taste better,” penned another user.
