This is certainly a scary thing to happen to anyone! A Malaysian girl recently shared on Facebook how she was allegedly almost raped by one of the hotel staff who had somehow managed to sneak into her room in the early morning.
Based on her Facebook post which has gone viral, the incident happened on November 29 at around 7.20am. She had booked a three day holiday at one of the resorts in Langkawi and was looking forward to a relaxing vacation when she went through a traumatising experience.
She had woken up at 7am on the second day and was lying on her bed in her gym outfit ready for a jog when she noticed a shadow behind one of the glass panels in her suite.
She wrote, “I asked ‘Who are you?’ when suddenly a topless man clad in black trousers appeared and pushed me to the bed. I started to scream and struggle violently. He covered my mouth and asked me to stop screaming. I asked him ‘What do you want? You want money?'”
To her horror, the assailant said, “I want you,” and she started fighting with him. At one point she even managed to punch his nose until he bled. Luckily her fight was too much for the guy and he pushed her into the bathroom, closed the door and made his escape.
She called the reception for help and they sent a buggy to her room driven by a man who looked remarkably like her assailant. She checked out at around 8.30am and the same driver sent her back to her room where she started packing and took the bloodstained bedsheet with her for evidence. Smart girl!
The victim proceeded to the Kuala Teriang police station to make a report around 10am and they sent her to the hospital for a medical checkup. Fortunately, she did not suffer any injuries.
After some investigation from the police, they arrested a suspect which was the buggy driver of the hotel. The police said that the 17-year-old boy had confessed after some interrogation but he did not admit that he wanted to rape her.
She said, “The police told me that the suspect admitted that his motive of entering the room was to rob me but when he realised she was awake, he hid in my room. He had taken the key to my room from housekeeping and took off his shirt because he did not want to be recognised as one of the hotel’s staff.”
The victim questioned the police, who apparently told her that there was not enough evidence to charge him for sexual assault. Instead, they would investigate the case under Section 354 of the Penal Code for assault or use of criminal force with the intention to outrage modesty, and Section 448 for trespassing.
After her ordeal, she left Langkawi but in her post, she expressed a few grievances towards the resort, saying that the hotel wasn’t secure as there was only one lock on the door and the staff wasn’t helpful at all. They even insisted to charge her for her first night’s stay!
According to The Star, Langkawi district police chief Asst Comm Dr Che Ghazali Che Awang said that they are processing a remand order for the boy and had contacted the resort’s operator who was in Kuala Lumpur when the alleged attempted rape happened.
“I am not sure of what actually happened and will be going back to get the actual picture. To be fair, I would need to obtain the facts from the resort’s Human Resources Department and get a clearer idea of what happened when I’m back. However, I will cooperate with the police on the investigation,” the operator said.
Thankfully the girl is now safe and sound but always be careful when travelling, girls! Especially when you’re alone!
