Although we should never fear the authorities, it can sometimes be intimidating and scary when you’re randomly stopped and asked to hand over certain documents.
This can be even more scary when you’re a woman who’s being approached by a man claiming to be a police officer.
Recently, Malaysian girl group DOLLA took to their social media pages to share their experience of being intimidated by 3 men who were pretending to be undercover police officers.
In their post they stated that they were waiting for their ride home after finishing their dance rehearsal around 11:30pm last night (December 20) when suddenly, a red Proton car approached them with the windows down.
3 men then exited the car and identified themselves as police officers but failed to present their police badges and were wearing normal clothes and driving an ordinary vehicle.
“They asked if we were Malaysian, and immediately demanded our ICs and proceeded to take pictures of them and of us without our consent.”
“We felt very violated because when Syasya asked for clarification, one of them aggressively replied, ‘Why not? We’re the police!’,” they explained.
Fortunately, a car then stopped by next to them which prompted the 3 men to hurry back to their car and return their ICs.
“We don’t know if this is a scam. If anyone has been through this, do let us know and advise us on what we should do. PLEASE STAY SAFE OUT THERE GUYS. ESPECIALLY GIRLS,” concluded their post.
At the time of writing, there has been no update from DOLLA or any official statement released by the PDRM regarding the incident.
This is a reminder for everyone to know their rights when being questioned by the police. Have you been through something similar?
