The phrase “Health is Wealth” carries more meaning than many people realise. Aside from acting as encouragement for one to remember how crucial it is to care for your well-being, it’s also important to learn accurate practices so that we prioritise our health correctly.
A recent TikTok clip has been making waves online after Malaysian content creator and medical practitioner Dr Malar Santhi shared an insightful and eye-opening fact to her page @drmalarss. In the video, Dr Malar revealed that the common practice for people to drink about 2-3 litres of water per day, or 8 glasses of water per day, is actually not as accurate as what people may think.
Providing an equation to assist her viewers, Dr Malar stated that individuals will need to multiply their current bodyweight in kilograms with the number 0.03 to determine how many litres of water they require in a day. After doing some sleuthing of our own, WORLD OF BUZZ discovered that this calculation is known as the Daily Water Intake calculator.
However, Dr Malar added in a subsequent TikTok clip that such calculation does vary depending on one’s body weight. For individuals with a body mass index (BMI) score of more than 30, therefore falling under the category of obesity, Dr Malar shared that they should NOT use this same metric.
Instead, Dr Malar stated that the avenue for individuals of this weight range would need to be adjusted through a scale known as the Adjusted Body Weight (ABW) calculator, which can easily be found online. After determining one’s ABW, said number can then be multiplied by 0.03.
Aside from that, Dr Malar also said that those with heart conditions and kidney issues should consult their medical doctors or dieticians for the accurate amount of water they should drink respectively, as it differs, even for those with various other ailments.
“Another easy way to see if your body is hydrated or not is by checking on the colour of your urine. If it is too clear, that is not good, cause there is too much water in your body. If it is pale yellow or transparent yellow, it is the best,” added Dr Malar in the TikTok video.
Nevertheless, Dr Malar also commented on the types of minerals most people lack in their day-to-day lives for the muscles and organs in our bodies. Among them included zinc and iron. Suggesting natural foods such as chicken, eggs, nuts, and vegetables, Dr Malar carried on by stating how important these items act as nutrients to replenish zinc and iron in our bodies.
Dr Malar also spoke on the importance of magnesium and silica, where the latter provides elasticity to one’s skin. Commenting on how water is an easy source to consume an adequate amount of silica, the doctor added that many mineral water bottles have the quantity of silica written on the back of its packaging, aside from other kinds of foods as well.
In concluding her video, Dr Malar stated that she hopes this will encourage members of the public to drink more water and consume necessary minerals for the sake of preserving one’s health on a daily basis.
