We’ve seen all kinds of weird things happening in Malaysia but have you ever seen fish randomly skipping down a kampung road?
Netizen, pikat.asia, took to his TikTok page to showcase numerous Ikan Puyu (climbing perch) ‘walking’ down a path in Cherating, Pahang.
He wrote, “I was passing by here to go catch chickens when I saw so many Ikan Puyu on land. (Should I) catch and fry them?”
In his video, over a dozen Ikan Puyu could be seen skipping down a dirt path filled with tiny puddles.
However, what makes this situation so crazy is the fact that no large bodies of water can be seen nearby, it’s all dry land! Where did they come from?
Well, it turns out that a climbing perch has an organ that lets it breathe air and allows it to survive on land for several days in moist conditions. They can also move across land by wiggling their pectoral fins!
But, that’s not all.
Elderly Malaysians believe that the appearance of climbing perch on land is a sign that floods are coming.
“Elderly people say that there will be huge floods if Ikan Puyu come to land.”
“The elderly say that, if Ikan Puyu come to land, (there will be a) huge flood.”
“Before the 2014 flood, this was the sign for the huge flood in Pahang, many Ikan Puyu came to land near my house.”
“During the flood season, Ikan Puyu are quick to come to land.”
