Following the devastating 7.7-magnitude earthquake and 6.4-magnitude earthquake that hit Myanmar yesterday (March 28), a team of 10 members from the National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma) has been dispatched to aid in relief efforts.
While Myanmar authorities have reported 144 fatalities, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) estimates the death toll could surpass 10,000.
Wisma Putra announced that a Nadma team has been sent to Yangon to offer technical assistance and conduct an on-site needs assessment.

“Based on the initial team’s findings, a second Nadma deployment of 40 personnel is scheduled to depart on Sunday,” the statement read.
“This larger team will focus on addressing priority areas identified during the assessment, ensuring Malaysia’s assistance is targeted, relevant, and responsive to the evolving situation.”
Wisma Putra’s statement mentioned that the Malaysian Embassy in Yangon will support Nadma’s operations.

“Malaysia remains committed to regional cooperation and will continue contributing to humanitarian relief and disaster management efforts across ASEAN,” Wisma Putra said.
“In the spirit of shared responsibility, Malaysia stands with all affected communities throughout the recovery period.”
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has also expressed concern over the extent of the devastation and affirmed Malaysia’s readiness to support ongoing humanitarian and recovery efforts.
