According to World Health Organization (WHO) statistics, between 2013 and 2016 road users using two and three-wheeled vehicles have seen an increase in deaths from 23% to 28%.
The statistic which covers Africa Americas, Southeast Asia, Europe, Eastern Mediterranean and Western Pacific, states that nearly 30% of all crash fatalities uses motorcycles, mopeds, scooters and electric bikes.
According to WHO Head of Safety and Mobility Nhan Tran, “Nearly 30% of all road deaths in Southeast Asia involve powered two and three-wheeled vehicles such as motorcycles, mopeds, scooters and electrical bikes (e-bikes), and the numbers are rising.”.
Global data show the rate of road deaths per 100,000 population is highest in Southeast Asia and Africa, with teenagers and adults aged 15 to 34 making up most deaths by age group.
As of August 2021, a total of 89,953 motorcyclists have died on Malaysian roads since 2001.
