Sex education for children has always been a topic of debate for many.
Recently, the Minister for Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development of Sarawak, Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah, has spoken out about this issue during the Inaugural Lecture Parenting On Sexuality seminar held at UNIMAS on 17 August.
Speaking about sex education, the minister said that parents must give guidance to their children in a lot of things including sex education to ensure that their rights are protected.
“The aim of sex education is not to expose them to negative things at an early age but it’s so that the parents are more open and can open up their minds.”
She continued, “This is why we think that sex education is still needed now to ensure awareness and from an intervention angle.”
“If a child’s rights was violated, they must know what they need to do, to where they should make a report and the next steps to make sure that the child’s socioemotions are paid attention to.”
According to UKAS, the minister also said that the seminar is focused solely on sex education and comprises many other aspects such as biology, intellect, emotions, social and spiritual.
We do agree that children should be taught sex education so that they know what are good touches or bad touches.
