A planned “Melayu Berdaulat” rally in Kuala Lumpur to protest the government’s alleged failure to look after the rights and interests of Malay-Muslims in Malaysia by several NGOs will proceed today despite the road closures in place for the ASEAN Summit 2025.

In a statement, as shared by BERNAMA, the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) said that it has held discussions with the organisers, but the latter was adamant that they would proceed with the rally.

Previously, the Dang Wangi Police Chief was quoted by BERNAMA as saying that the police have received information about the intention of a group of NGOs to organise the rally based on the provisions under the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012.

The secretariat of the Malaysian NGO coalition is targeting more than 15,000 participants for the “Himpunan Melayu Berdaulat”, which is scheduled to start at 2.30pm today.

The rally is taking place at the same time as the ASEAN Summit 2025, which is being hosted in the Malaysian capital city from 23 to 28 May.
