Durian lovers rejoice! A brand new breed is here.
When it comes to durians, Malaysia is currently one of the leading countries in the world with a praiseworthy breadth of durians developed to suit every palette.
Musang King, Jin Feng, XO, D24, Black Thorn, you name it, the types and variations keep on coming!
Not wanting to be outdone in the durian game typically dominated by Penang, Perak, Johor, and Pahang, Malaccans have risen to the occasion by developing their unique breed called Lima Jari (Five Fingers).
Hilariously, the durian is also referred to as The Rock, and we theorise it’s named after the gesture Dwayne Johnson always did in his wrestling days.
This Jasin native boasts a creamy texture with a sweet taste and thick flesh to match. Surely this breed must be finger-licking good! And as heavenly as that sounds, that is not only its trait.
According to its breeders, the fruit is also characterised by its monstrous size! — just look at the pictures. Bernama tweeted that the weight of the fruit ranges from three to four kgs per fruit.
Walaowei!
According to the State Agriculture, Entrepreneurs Development, Cooperative and Agro-based Industries Committee Chairman Norhizan Hassan Baktee, at first glance, the durian may seem to be imported from neighbouring Thailand, but it’s in fact, Malaccan through and through.
So if you are looking for the next must-try durian, or just want to sample something other than Musang King, give the Lima Jari a try, which is sold at just RM12-14 per kg.
