Recently, a Grab delivery rider, Muhammad Hilmi, made waves across Malaysia after he had gone above and beyond to deliver food to a customer right after his phone was snatched.
Since then, many Malaysians have come to his aid, including helping him by getting him a new phone, garnering donations for him and more.
We at World of Buzz spoke to Hilmi, to hear his thoughts on the recent incident and the out-pour of support he received from Malaysians.
What was the first thing that went through your mind when your phone was snatched?
The first thing that came into my head was to get my phone back. I tried to chase after the thief but I couldn’t get it. My bike has lower capabilities than his.
Why did you choose to deliver the food first after your phone was stolen?
Because I had nothing in my hand except for the food, I decided to settle the delivery and go back home to settle my lost phone by calling the bank, call centre and so forth. Other than that, I was thinking if I do not complete the job, there will be more trouble such as a complaint from the customer and the worst is maybe I could get suspended from Grab. That’s why I chose to complete the job.
What lessons gave you taken out of this incident?
To be more alert of my surroundings and to take extra care of my belongings.
What is your favourite experience as a rider?
I like working as a Grab rider because of the time flexibility, you can manage it by yourself to achieve your targets. The pay is also quite good if you are hardworking. I lost my job as a tourist guide during the pandemic and didn’t know how long it would last, so with Grab, you can easily apply without waiting for long and it was the only opportunity I got to recover my earnings.
What has Grab done for you following the incident?
Grab called me through my wife’s number the next morning, asked about my condition, whether I’m okay and took the necessary action by blocking the account so that the thief cannot use my account for wrongdoings. Grab also wanted to reward me with vouchers and a new phone for me to continue my work.
Do you have anything you would like to say to the people who are praising you for your dedication?
Firstly, I would like to thank you all for your kindness, prayers and wishes, thank you very much. Secondly, please take extra care of yourselves, especially during this Covid-19 pandemic, stay safe everywhere. Lastly, if you have a secure job, please work properly and harder to sustain the job because a lot of people out there are losing their jobs during this Covid-19 pandemic.
It’s clear that Muhammad Hilmi is a hard-worker who is willing to make ends meet after the Covid-19 pandemic took its toll on his livelihood. His dedication towards his job is apparent in his words.
It’s sad that bad things can happen to good people but the way Hilmi picked himself up and solved his problems shows us how life can get better and problems can be solved with a little hard work and dedication.
Kudos, Muhammad Hilmi, you’re truly an inspiration to Malaysians.
