Two members of the Penang Island City Council (MBPP) were reportedly injured after a bundle of balloons, seized from an illegal vendor, exploded and caught fire last night (1 February).

According to a report by Malaysia Gazette, the incident occurred at the MBPP Licensing Division headquarters on Lebuh Union at approximately 10:45 PM. The explosion happened while officers were unloading the confiscated balloons from an MBPP pickup truck.

The balloons were seized from illegal vendors

The balloons had been seized earlier that evening during an enforcement operation against illegal vendors at the Thaipusam festival site on Jalan Kebun Bunga.

While the balloons were being moved, they suddenly exploded, triggering a flash fire that caused burns to two officers and damaged the council vehicle.

One officer sustained minor injuries, while the second suffered more severe burns to his body and hands and was hospitalised for further treatment.

A video of the incident went viral
