A Vietnamese man became the talk of the town after not only stealing from a supermarket on Jalan Telaga Air, Butterworth, but also attempting to take an 11-month-old baby hostage while trying to escape.

The incident, which occurred at 12:45 pm, was caught on video and quickly went viral on social media.

According to Seberang Perai Utara District Police Chief ACP Anuar Abd Rahman, the man tried to leave the premises with several weighed seafood items without making payment.

“After the supervisor attempted to apprehend him, the suspect grabbed an 11-month-old baby boy who was with his family. He then held the baby while brandishing a knife and pointed it at members of the public.”

Thanks to the swift action of several supermarket employees and members of the public, the suspect was subdued and handed over to the police upon their arrival at the scene.

Despite suffering bruises, the child and others involved are reportedly safe.

The case is being investigated under Sections 380, 324, and 506 of the Penal Code.
