A man was caught red-handed by a salesperson after trying to buy jewellery using counterfeit banknotes at a gold shop in Kuala Terengganu, Terengganu.
A video of the incident has since gone viral, which took place at a gold shop along Jalan Chabang Tiga yesterday (18 December) around 3:10 PM.

The suspect

A man wearing a facemask, a kopiah and sunglasses tried to buy jewellery with fake money
In the clip, the suspect is seen arriving alone, wearing a white kopiah, dark sunglasses, and a pink facemask.
The footage also showed the aftermath, with the owner of the Emas Lelong Maya shop and his staff inspecting a stack of counterfeit money left behind by the suspect.
According to Harian Metro, Kuala Terengganu District Police Chief Assistant Commissioner Azli Mohd Noor said the report was lodged by a 36-year-old male salesperson.

The complainant explained that he was at the counter when a man in his early 30s approached him.
“The suspect expressed his intention to buy jewellery worth around RM30,000. A colleague then showed him several gold bracelets,” he said.
Azli added that the suspect, who had taken photos of the jewellery claiming he wanted to show them to his wife, entered and left the shop twice before finally saying he wanted to proceed with the purchase.

The suspect fled the scene in a dark blue Axia
Azli said that while the receipt was being prepared, the salesperson asked the man to hand over the cash for counting.
“The salesperson noticed the suspect placing a bundle of money inside a yellow plastic bag, but immediately suspected something was off as the edges of the notes appeared white,” he explained.
He added that when the salesperson took a closer look at the money, a brief struggle broke out as he pulled the suspect’s hand along with the cash.
“The suspect then became aggressive and fled the scene in a vehicle parked in front of the shop. He drove off in a dark blue Perodua Axia, but checks later revealed the plate was fake,” Azli said.

He also confirmed that no losses were recorded in the incident, and the case is being investigated under Section 489B of the Penal Code.
“Full CCTV footage has yet to be obtained, and footage from nearby shops will also be reviewed to help with the investigation.”
