The curry puff is a delightful pastry loved by all Malaysians. These flaky, crispy puffs are filled with savory curried potatoes, chicken, and onions, making them a heavenly and popular choice for all the right reasons!
It’s wonderful to discover that we’re not the only ones who think so! The Curry Puff has recently been included in the top 100 pastries in the world.
Taste Atlas has officially ranked Curry Puff as the fifth-best pastry in the world. The Greek pie, bougatsa, claimed fourth place on the list and is said to have originated as a dough stuffed with various sweet and savory fillings.
In sixth place is Italy’s Focaccia di Recco col formaggio, reportedly invented in the 12th century. Legend has it that citizens of Recco prepared this dish for the Crusaders using simple ingredients: flour, water, olive oil, and cheese.
Describing Curry Puff as a flavorful snack, Taste Atlas notes its invention by the Malays from the Malay Peninsula and parts of Sumatra and Borneo.
“It is a popular breakfast item or an afternoon snack which can be found at numerous stores, bars, and markets. Because of its simplicity and flavor, karipap quickly became popular outside Malaysia, especially in Thailand and Singapore.”
However, there are numerous versions of the Curry Puff nowadays and we are fortunate to enjoy these variations.
