A TikTok video shared by @latifahhuang has been making the rounds online, featuring a group of students from China sharing why they chose to learn Bahasa Melayu.
The video has since caught the attention of many Malaysians, who were pleasantly surprised by how fluent the students were in the Malaysian national language, despite one of them only learning the language for seven months.

“Why did you decide to learn Bahasa Melayu?”
In the video, the group was interviewed in response to a netizen’s comment asking why they chose to learn Bahasa Melayu.
The interviewer, speaking in Bahasa Melayu, asks each of them to introduce themselves, and they all confidently reply in the language.
When asked why they decided to learn it, one student shared,
“Asian countries, especially Malaysia, share a close connection with my hometown and even with me personally. I feel a strong bond and closeness.”

“I love Malaysian culture”
Meanwhile, another student shared that she and her family visited Malaysia back in 2010, and even then, she felt a special connection to the country, calling it “a beautiful place.” Another described Malaysia as “a peaceful country”.

One of the students also explained why she chose to learn Bahasa Melayu, saying:
“My hometown is close to Malaysia, and I really love the culture there. That’s why I chose Bahasa Malaysia as my major.”
The interviewer then asked what their favourite Malaysian food was, and they answered (in order): cendol and kuih lapis, roti tissue, anything spicy, and nasi lemak.

Netizens started flooding the comment section with their thoughts and reactions.

“They speak Bahasa Malaysia more fluently than some blue IC holders.”

“Okay, now they can apply for Malaysian citizenship.”

“Wow, that’s impressive. I’m from Indonesia, and even though I go to school in Malaysia, I still struggle to write essays.”
