Previously, we shared how a Malaysian urged Muslims in the country to be more respectful of Ramadan by avoiding overspending and wasting food which gained a lot of support from netizens. Well, it seems such sentiment is shared by Datuk Seri Mohd Annuar Zaini, the Perak Islamic Religious and Malay Customs Council (MAIPk) president who stressed that wasting food is against Islamic culture.
As reported by The Vibes, Annuar expressed his disappointment at Muslims who indulged in lavish food when the holy month of Ramadan was meant to teach believers the pain and suffering of those in poverty. Furthermore, the MAIPk president said that from an Islamic perspective, Muslims are encouraged to go to mosques to perform their prayers rather than indulge in Ramadan buffets that sometimes even feature live music and singers.
Annuar asserted,
“You (buffet operators) drag people to stay with entertainment and music. They will stay and eat more food when they are encouraged to inject life to mosques. When they start bringing children (to buffets), they are teaching the wrong values and culture to the young ones.”
He further commented that it is wrong for businesses to market the term ‘Ramadan buffet’ and charge exorbitant fees to customers. He said that it can be viewed as taking advantage of people’s hunger after a long day of fasting.
