Child labour remains to a certain extent a common occurrence in Malaysia. This situation is concerning and raises issues regarding child welfare and rights.
According to New Straits Times, police in Kuala Pilah arrested 2 men for allegedly exploiting a 14-year-old disabled boy who was a victim of child labour.
He was forced to collect scrap materials
Kuala Pilah police chief Supt Amran Mohd Gani said the 1st suspect was caught monitoring a boy collecting scrap materials at a house around 5:30pm on May 12.
“The second suspect, who police believe hired the boy, was arrested after we gathered more information,” he added.
Police from the district’s criminal investigation department managed to arrest the 2 suspects, aged 23 and 27, who have been detained for 7 days starting March 13.
The victim has been sent to a shelter, and authorities are investigating the case under Section 14 of the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Act 2007.
