And yet, another show in KL gets canceled.
Just recently, the Gemu Club in KL announced a 2nd show by Korean “Monk DJ”, New Jeans Nim which was scheduled for 21st May, the Wesak Day’s eve night. Previously, NJM performed at the same club earlier this month, and due to overwhelming demand, the Gemu Club is bringing the “monk DJ” back for a 2nd show.
Unfortunately, the show CANNOT go on, and the club canceled the show after the Malaysian Young Buddhist Association voiced out against it.
“We received complaints from Buddhist practitioners saying that the show is similar to disrespecting Buddhism.”
NJS is seen dressing like a monk and that’s not the only issue. According to a statement by YBAM, part of the DJ’s body movement, chanting, and interaction with the crowds “duplicate” the act of a real monk.
The Triple Gem is the core of Buddhist teachings and the realisation of Dharma. YBAM believes that it is not appropriate for someone who “impersonates” a monk to perform Buddhist-related rituals in entertainment venues like dance clubs.
“The dance club contains elements that potentially violates the 5 Precepts, including alcohols and raving content.”
YBAM, who is also NOT hoping for the escalation of 3R issues says that the show by the DJ may confuse others about the true meaning of Buddhism.
“The sanctity of Buddhism has to be protected”
The former Ministry of Transport, Dato Seri Wee Ka Siong also weighed in on the matter and said he was on board with YBAM’s call against the show. To Wee, it’s not appropriate for someone to “impersonate” a monk for a show, especially when the scheduled show is just a night before Wesak Day.
Wee also said the impersonation has angered the Buddhist community.
“He has given a wrong perception of Buddhist values and teachings. His controversial acts have hurt the feelings of the Buddhist community,” Wee said in his Facebook post.
Recently, a few videos showing the DJ in action went viral on social media, which got the attention of YBAM and other Buddhist practitioners who were not happy with what they saw.
Do you think the show must go on, or best to be cancelled to avoid unwanted issues?
