Key Witness in Lim Guan Eng’s High-Profile Corruption Trial Attacked at His Residence in PJ

A businessman, who is also a key witness in the Penang undersea tunnel project corruption case involving former Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng, was injured after being attacked by a group of individuals at his residence in Petaling Jaya today (August 6).

The businessman is believed to be the main prosecution witness in the high-profile case trial.

According to a report by Sinar Harian, the Petaling Jaya District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Shahrulnizam Jaafar, shared that his department received a report in regards to this incident at about 7:10am.

“Investigations are still underway at the scene, and a media statement will be issued soon,” he added.

It is understood that the victim suffered injuries to his mouth and wrist. Two security guards on duty at the residence were also tied up by the attackers.

 

About the case

Guan Eng, who is also a former Finance Minister, is currently on trial for 4 corruption charges involving the Penang undersea tunnel construction project and the dual carriageway project connecting Penang island to the mainland.

He, who is also the current MP for Bagan, is accused of:

  • Using his position as the then-Chief Minister of Penang to receive RM3.3 million by helping Consortium Zenith Construction Sdn Bhd, owned by Datuk Zarul Ahmad Zulkifli, to implement the Penang Main Roads and Tunnels Construction Project worth RM6,341,383,702 between January 2011 and August 2017.
  • Soliciting a bribe of 10% of the profits to be obtained from Zarul Ahmad, as a reward for helping the businessman’s company be appointed for the same project
  • 2 charges of causing 2 lots of land owned by the Penang government, worth RM208.8 million, to be disposed of to a developer company in relation to the undersea tunnel project in the state.

The trial continues on Tuesday (August 19).
