The Malaysia Civil Defence Force (APM) responded to an emergency call in Kampung Tembak B, near Paya Keladi in Baling, Kedah, earlier today, where they discovered a shocking scene: a python swallowing a 5-month-old calf.

Taking to its Facebook page, APM Baling District shared details of the operation conducted within an oil palm plantation, including several photos and a video of the distressing incident.

Berita Harian quoted Baling APM Officer Lieutenant (PA) Mohd Faizol Abd Aziz, who stated that the agency received the emergency call at 8:20 pm. A team of four personnel, led by Lance Corporal (PA) Mohd Radzi Said, was immediately dispatched to the scene.

Mohd Faizol confirmed that the python measured 5.5 metres in length and weighed 45 kilogrammes. Alarmingly, the incident occurred approximately 500 metres from residential homes.

The cattle owner’s account

The report added that the incident was witnessed by the calf’s mother, which had been searching for its offspring.

Meanwhile, the cattle owner, 57-year-old Wan Hasbullah Wan Ismail, explained that the calf had gone missing in the afternoon whilst grazing in the area.

Wan Hasbullah was understandably shocked upon finding the python mid-meal. He shared:

“There wasn’t a single sound before that, and half of the calf’s body had already been swallowed by the python. I contacted APM Baling for assistance.

“I’ve never seen a python here before; perhaps due to the hot weather and hunger, it emerged to seek shelter and food.”

Public safety warning

Mohd Faizol urged residents to contact the relevant agencies immediately if they encounter similar situations.

He noted that snakes are currently venturing out of their natural habitats in search of food and relief from the intense heat.
