The world of fashion is so vast and westernised that when we see familiar Southeast Asian designs, we can’t help but jump for joy.
Which is why it brings smiles to our faces to see Malaysian fashion designer Datuk Jimmy Choo on the streets of the United Kingdom (UK), donning and championing local designs.
World Microphone took to their Instagram account to showcase the street interview they did with Datuk Jimmy Choo and his mentee, Malaysian fashion designer Peony Sin, who is also the brains behind the gorgeous Songket designs they both were rocking.
“This blazer’s material is Songket, it is the most treasured fabric in Malaysia. Sewn by hand, with gold and silver threads. This jacket was designed for me by my favourite student (referring to Peony),” Jimmy said. And we must say, they both were looking sharp!
Peony went on to share how her Songket designs came to be.
“Songket is our Malaysian woven fabric, used for occasions such as weddings, traditional religious events. It is a modern design incorporating elements of Chinese cheongsam to showcase our diverse Malaysian culture,” Peony explained.
Jimmy Choo further praised Peony’s eye for design while feeling proud of it’s origins, “The concept of mixing Chinese and Western cultures with Songket, we let our best designer to introduce it to the world.”
“I really respect my parents’ origins. We are still Chinese after all, I am a Malaysian Chinese.”
We sincerely cannot wait to see what the future holds for Peony and her absolutely gorgeous Songket designs!
