A well-known conservative activist, famous for rallying young Republican voters, was shot and killed yesterday (10 September) during an event at a college in Utah, United States (US).
Charlie Kirk, a close ally of Donald Trump, was later said by the state’s governor to have been the victim of a political assassination carried out from a rooftop.

“It was a political assassination“
Videos on social media capture the moment Kirk was speaking under a white tent at Utah Valley University when a gunshot suddenly rang out, causing him to clutch his neck as blood poured out while the crowd screamed and scrambled for safety.
The Associated Press later confirmed the footage was taken at the Sorensen Center courtyard on campus.
According to AP News, no arrests have been made yet, but authorities say they’re now looking for a new person of interest.
“This is a dark day for our state. It’s a tragic day for our nation. I want to be very clear, this was a political assassination,” Utah Gov. Spencer Cox said.

Earlier in the day, there was confusion after FBI Director Kash Patel posted that a suspect had been taken into custody, only to later clarify that the individual was questioned and released.
Police have not yet confirmed the identity of that person, a possible motive, or any charges.
The attack has once again raised alarms about the growing threat of political violence in the United States (US), a problem that has surfaced across the political spectrum in recent years.
While both parties condemned the shooting, finding real solutions to stop political tensions from turning deadly remains out of reach.
