A recent post has caught the attention of many netizens after a local professor made a claim that the iron found in Kedah could be linked to meteors.

In her sharing titled “Iron From The Sky | Why Is Kedah Rich In Iron?”, International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) academic Prof. Dr Solehah Yaacob discussed Kedah’s relatively flat landscape from a geological perspective, as well as the iron resources discovered around Sungai Batu.

Why she thinks Kedah’s iron could be linked to meteors

Dr Solehah also explored several questions surrounding Kedah’s geography, geology and ancient civilisation, including why its terrain differs from areas along the Titiwangsa Range, whether meteor activity could be linked to iron deposits, and why the discovery of iron in Sungai Batu is significant in understanding ancient Kedah.

“Have we ever wondered where the large amount of iron found in Kedah came from? Could Kedah’s geographical location and the discovery of iron in Sungai Batu be connected to the geological formation of the area?” the caption read.

She shared her perspective that the iron found in Kedah could be linked to meteors, claiming that the area around Mount Jerai is believed to be one of the places that experienced a meteor impact in the past.

She suggested that this could be explored alongside the significant quantities of iron discovered around Sungai Batu.

“This is not simply a discussion about iron”

Dr Solehah also suggested that Kedah’s relatively flat terrain may offer insights into the region’s geological past.

“Have we ever wondered why Kedah’s terrain is so flat, with only Mount Jerai standing out as a hilly area? People in Kedah may not realise that this area was hit by many meteors, which is why there is so much iron here. Even at Sungai Batu, you can find it just by digging a little,” she said in the video.

“This is not simply a discussion about iron. It is an invitation to take another look at the relationship between geography, natural resources, technology and the development of civilisations, as well as how material evidence can raise new questions about the history of the Malay Archipelago.”
