It’s Ramadan season, which means that our Muslim brothers and sisters have to wake up rather early to have a meal (sahur) before starting their fast for the day. This normally happens at about 5am.
But, what happens when they, along with everyone else, are being forced to wake up at 3:30am for this reason?
BERNAMA recently took to their Twitter page to showcase how residents from a neighbourhood in Ipoh are conducting parades with drums at 3:30am, to wake up their fellow Muslim community members for sahur.
They wrote, “Residents of Taman Klebang Putra 1 in Ipoh are marching with chants of ‘bangun sahur‘ (wake up for sahur) while being accompanied by the beating of drums and selawat in bringing the village tradition to the neighbourhood to wake up the Muslims in the residential area for sahur at about 3:30am earlier.”
Way too early for sahur and a noise disturbance to the entire neighbourhood
However, it seems that netizens believe that the parade is completely unnecessary.
“Which culture wakes up for sahur at 3:30 in the morning? In the days of Hang Tuah yes, there were no alarm clocks or handphones. Now, we have all of that. This is disturbing small children or babies who want to sleep peacefully.”
“Did you get the approval of the residents’ association? Pity the little children and non-Muslims. When living next to each other, we must all be respectful and take care of peace together,” said a user.
Another user commented, “They used to have to do this because there were no clocks, now it doesn’t seem practical because there are all kinds of technology existing so that we can wake up at whatever time we want.”
“Sahur at 3:30am? Seriously? Is the housing area all Muslims? There are no small children? There is no one who needs to rest and sleep? (What about those) who have set alarms for 5am,” said another netizen.
