It’s fair to say that many Malaysians have negative perceptions about Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET). Considered the last choice by many in our country when furthering their studies, many have the misconception that TVET graduates have ‘no future’ in the working field.
This can’t be further from the truth and through its ‘Jejak Alumni‘ series, MARA Skills Institute (IKM) Kuching sought to prove these perceptions wrong by showcasing successful alumni from the institute.
A Sarawakian TVET graduate making a name for himself overseas
The latest of which features Dexter Anak Vincent, an IKM Kuching graduate hailing from Bintulu, Sarawak who’s currently making a name for himself in New Orleans, Louisana in the United States.
Taking to Facebook, IKM Kuching shared the successful career Dexter has had since graduating in 2012 with a certificate in welding technology.
The Mara Institute shared that as soon as he graduated, Dexter worked in Bintulu Yard.
Afterwards, he moved to Singapore to work at the Heerema Marine Contractor for a few years.
Dexter was honoured by his company with a special award for his excellent work
Now, Dexter is plying his trade at a company based in New Orleans and recently, he was even honoured by the company with a special award.
The award was bestowed to Dexter because he successfully identified an issue with an operation and immediately called for a ‘stop the job’.
Thanks to his awareness and complete follow-up actions to the issue, Dexter prevented further damage to the equipment and possible project delay was prevented.
Lauding Dexter’s successful career thus far, IKM Kuching asserted,
“Congratulations Decter! Please continue to bring the name of Anak Malaysia and MARA to make Sarawak and Malaysia proud!
“Who says TVET graduates can’t succeed? Here’s the proof…”
Awesome! So, what do you guys think of Dexter’s story? Share your thoughts with us in the comments!
