The bold actions of an Indonesian woman garnered widespread attention in the Republic recently for her rather creative way of protesting the local government’s incompetency.
Taking to her social media pages, the woman, Ummi Hani shared several photos and videos of herself posing and ‘swimming’ inside the potholes of the derelict roads in the Merbau Mataram subdistrict of South Lampung in Sumatra.
‘Swimming’ in the potholes to protest the derelict road conditions
Going viral in the country, she tagged the local government’s social media accounts and several of the local top government officials, including the regent in charge of the constituency in a Facebook post.
The post was filled with photos of herself posing and playing with the muddy waters inside the massive potholes of the Merbau Mataram roads while fully dressed in a fully black Muslim garb.
In each of the photos, Ummi Hani held several papers with messages to those in power, including:
- “We want realisation, not intimidation”
- “Accidents that have caused deaths”
- “Locals have aspirations but they say we just want fame”
- “The roads are extremely derelict”
- “Negative impacts on education, health and economy”
- “The authorities are well aware but pretend they don’t know”
The locals have had enough
In the captions, the woman wrote,
“For the umpteenth time, we urge the relevant authorities to fix the road infrastructure as this is 1 of the main access points connecting the rural areas…
“Enough with the roads being damaged, don’t let the locals’ trust for you be damaged too,”
