QR codes have been a great convenience for us to transfer money easily!
And on that note, we suppose it was about time that we heard a crime story involving a QR code scam…
A video of a man sticking his own personal bank QR code stickers on donation boxes at the Nurul Iman mosque in Jakarta recently went viral.
It is understood that the mosque’s committee had noticed many new bank QR code stickers being placed on the mosque’s walls and donation boxes that were previously not there.
Knowing that it was not their stickers, the committee then checked the mosque’s CCTV footage and caught the culprit on camera.
The mosque has since removed the fake QR stickers that led scanners to send money to a Sumatra-based bank account disguised as a fund for mosque renovations.
The blasphemy doesn’t end there as it was understood that the man had placed more of his fake QR codes at several other mosques in the area!
The man also had time to visit the largest mosque in Southeast Asia, Istiqlal Mosque in Jakarta and placed at least 50 stickers of his own bank QR codes around the mosque.
Thankfully, the man has since been identified and arrested by the Jakarta Police.
The evil mastermind was said to have been captured by local police at a posh house located in South Jakarta.
