Sweet teriyaki sauce, savoury miso soup, flavourful tonkotsu ramen, and wholesome Japanese curry. Japanese flavours are truly one of a kind lah, especially Japanese curry. For cosmic reasons unbeknownst to us, Japanese curry is the ultimate comfort food that guarantees fullness in our stomachs and souls upon consumption.
If you love Japanese curry as much as we do, then we have a strong feeling that you konfem will LOVE these Japanese curry dishes! Try not to read this at midnight ya, otherwise can’t satisfy your cravings. ?
1. Ebi Fry Curry: Prawn lovers, rejoice!
Nothing says a match made in heaven, like the rich taste of Japanese curry with crunchy deep-fried prawn tenpuras and long beans. Round it up with a side of piping hot fragrant rice and various side dishes, which “cushion” the intense tastes of the prawn tenpuras and curry, letting you slowly savour every bit of taste you can detect!
2. Chicken Katsu Curry: A timeless classic
You simply can’t go wrong with the classic combo of Japanese-style deep-fried chicken cutlets and Japanese curry. All you need are freshly-steamed rice and some side dishes, and you’ve got the perfect pick-me-up for your rainy days. The meatiness of the chicken cutlets makes this a fulfilling meal, but it’s the soothing Japanese curry that elevates the dish into one that’s heartwarming and soulful.
3. Salmon Steak Curry: Level up your salmon-tasting game!
If you love eating grilled salmon, then it’s pretty much guaranteed you’ll enjoy this to the max! Pair your rice meal with a deliciously deep-fried salmon fillet, topped with Japanese curry and side dishes, for a burst of flavour like no other. Somehow, the salmon brings plenty of richness to the curry, which is why it’s so perfect to eat it with rice – it surprisingly balances the flavour, so that it’s not too rich. ?
4. Cheesy Curry Baked Rice (Chicken Katsu or Yakiniku): Cheesy spicy goodness awaits
Cheesy Curry Baked Rice with Yakiniku
Forget about the cheese-baked rice at char chan tengs (HK-style cafés) because this one takes the cake! Who knew rice baked with Japanese curry, savoury minced chicken, vegetables and cheese could taste SO good?
Then, top it all off with your choice of deep-fried chicken cutlet or pan-fried beef.
Cheesy Curry Baked Rice with Chicken Katsu
Personally, we liked pairing the Cheesy Curry Baked Rice with Yakiniku. ? The earthy yet enriching tastes of the pan-fried beef do bring another layer of enjoyment to the cheesiness and curry-ness! Yummy yum!
5. Hotate Curry Yaki: Scallops + Japanese curry = spicylicious
Enhance your Japanese curry main meal even further with more Japanese curry side dishes! And what’s better than grilled fresh scallops with umami-boosting mushrooms (omg we kenot), topped with unique crabstick mayonnaise, must-have Japanese curry aaaaaand CHEESE! ? (we ded ?)
It might sound a little excessive to add on cheese, but we were impressed to find that wasn’t the case. Instead, the curry counteracts the cheesiness, bringing together a taste that reminded us of curry instant noodles with cheese. And we mean that in the best way possible! Be sure to rinse your palate with a cup of hot green tea before enjoying the next scallop!
6. Curry Age Tofu: Deep-fried tofu to dine for
This brings to mind a certain classic Chinese dish, but Japanese style! Deep-fried beancurd topped with an intriguing combo of minced chicken stir-fried with Japanese curry, creamy yet spicy curry mayonnaise and garnished with spring onions.
We LOVED the unique-tasting curry mayonnaise, which made the Curry Age Tofu more than just another Japanese curry dish, almost like modern Japanese fusion. And the spring onions are a nice touch that cuts through the tofu and curry for a little burst of flavour.
“All this Japanese curry talk is making me hungry lah. Where can I get them???”
