Actress Riena Diana recently responded firmly to a netizen’s insensitive remarks about people living in low-cost flats (PPR), highlighting the struggles and resilience of many Malaysians who make the best of their circumstances.
The curious netizen had asked, “Seriously, how can you live in a PPR? With the terrible smell of cat feces, many stray dogs, and garbage stinking all around.” The comment quickly drew attention for its harshness and lack of empathy.

“I stayed in a PPR with my father, and I never once complained.”
In her reply, Riena Diana shared her personal experience living in PPR Air Panas near Setapak when she was between 18 and 20 years old. She expressed pride in her father, who cared for her, her sibling and her grandmother during those years, acknowledging that it was all her family could afford at the time.

“I went to work late every night as a salesgirl at Toys ‘R’ Us, parking far away. Alhamdulillah, I was safe, and I never once complained,” she said, emphasising the importance of gratitude and resilience regardless of one’s living conditions.
“Not everyone has the luxury of staying somewhere clean and without unpleasant smells,” Riena ‘schooled’ the netizen.

Riena also reminded netizens to “mind their words before writing something.” Her response was firm but graceful, encouraging empathy and understanding for those facing financial hardships.
Her reply quickly gained traction on social media, with many applauding her honesty and courage in speaking out against judgmental attitudes. The actress’s message serves as a reminder that dignity and strength are not defined by one’s address, but by how one faces life’s challenges.
The netizen’s original post criticising PPR residents has since been taken down.
