Malaysian content creator and influencer Abe Wee recently expressed his displeasure at individuals who set off firecrackers directly next to the Mamak restaurant where he was dining during Chinese New Year (CNY) festivities.
Abe Wee, who was having a meal with fellow content creator Mek Yun, was left frustrated after their food and drinks were rendered inedible by the smoke and debris from the firecrackers.

“I understand it’s CNY, and it’s just once a year, but…”
In a viral TikTok post shared last night (18 February), he revealed that the firecrackers were ignited right next to where a restaurant employee was cooking, very close to their table. Both Abe Wee and Mek Yun were clearly distressed by the situation.
At one point, the influencer was seen rubbing his eyes due to the thick smoke.

In his post, Abe Wee noted that while he understands those celebrating CNY are still immersed in the festive mood, there is a proper time and place for such activities. Setting off firecrackers next to an eatery while customers are eating is simply inappropriate.
“We were eating, and suddenly the place was full of smoke.
“There go my Roti Sardin and iced tea. They reeked of smoke and were littered with debris from the firecrackers,” he shared.

A plea for tolerance
Abe Wee suggested that if the public insists on setting off firecrackers, they should do so before restaurants open or in more spacious areas.
In the comments section, he clarified that he was not calling for a ban on firecrackers, but rather advocating for tolerance and common sense.
“This isn’t just about CNY, but for all festive seasons too,” he added.
@abewee1 Abe Wee faham, Raya Cina setahun sekali. Semua orang nak main mercun, nak suasana meriah TAPI tolong tengok tempat. Pls respect tempat. Respect orang sekeliling. #fyp
The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) recently stated that no fireworks are permitted after midnight nationwide. Furthermore, the public is advised to only set them off in appropriate locations.
