Recently, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced an additional public holiday on Monday (September 15) in conjunction with Malaysia Day, which falls on September 16.
And while many are rejoicing at the idea of having an additional day off, Malaysian employers might be wondering how to handle the additional and compulsory public holiday.
The Human Resource (HR) Ministry recently took to its Facebook page to share the options employers have for providing additional public holiday leave to their employees.

They wrote, “September 15, 2025, has been declared a public holiday in conjunction with the celebration of Malaysia Day. Thank you, YAB Prime Minister, for your concern and special gifts to all Malaysians. This initiative reflects the spirit of CIVIL Malaysia – fostering unity, strengthening family well-being, and boosting the local economy.”
“Let’s take advantage of this holiday to strengthen unity, spend time with family and celebrate the national spirit!”
The post proceeded to offer employers 3 options to choose from based on how they would like to observe the additional public holiday. Employers can choose one of these three:
- Grant leave with regular pay
- Provide public holiday pay should the employee be required to work
- Replace the leave on another day
