An elderly man experienced a scary moment when he fell into a well near a nasi kandar restaurant at Jalan Telok Air Tawar, Penang, before he was successfully rescued by members of the public on Saturday (7 March).
In the incident at about 5:29 PM, the 63‑year‑old victim is believed to have fallen into the well, which was estimated to be five metres deep.

Penang Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) Assistant Director of the Fire and Rescue Operations Division, John Sagun Francis, said the victim was believed to have been in the well for two days before being noticed by the public.
Victim was a homeless man and is believed to have gone to the well to bathe
“The victim was fortunate because when he fell, the water level inside the well was at chest height,” he said.

“A team from the Butterworth Fire and Rescue Station (BBP) rushed to the location and arrived at 5:38 PM. The operation involved one officer and five personnel, including a supervisor,” he said in a statement.

John added that when the team arrived, the victim had already been pulled out by members of the public before firefighters reached the scene.
“The victim reportedly suffered minor injuries and exhaustion after being in the well for a long period.”
“The victim was given initial treatment at the scene before being taken to Seberang Jaya Hospital by the Ministry of Health (KKM) for further treatment,” he said.
The operation was fully concluded at 6:33 PM after the situation was confirmed to be safe.
