An explosion at HELP University in Bukit Damansara, Kuala Lumpur, on Monday (12 January) rocked the nation, claiming the life of a 24-year-old intern, Soo Yu Jian, and injuring nine others.
As reported earlier, the blast occurred at approximately 11:40 AM in the air-conditioning maintenance area on the fourth floor.

PERKESO steps in to assist university explosion victims
Following the tragic incident, the Social Security Organisation (PERKESO) has mobilised its PERKESO Prihatin Squad to assess the assistance that can be extended to victims of the explosion at the university.
In a statement, PERKESO said checks showed that two of the injured victims were contributors under the LINDUNG Pekerja scheme, making them eligible for benefits under the programme.
“PERKESO has confirmed that both Teh Wee Leon, 32, and Liew Yeng Chen, 55, qualify for Temporary Disability Benefits (Faedah Hilang Upaya Sementara, FHUS) based on their contributions.
“Upon learning of the incident, PERKESO officers immediately went to the hospital to gather further details. It was confirmed that Teh Wee Leon, a lecturer, and Liew Yeng Chen, a contractor, are eligible to receive FHUS,” the statement said.

“We will ensure the benefits are properly disbursed”
PERKESO also said it will look into other forms of assistance that can be extended to the victims.
The agency added that it will work closely with the employers to report the incident and take the necessary steps to ensure the benefits are properly disbursed.
“It is hoped that this assistance will help ease the burden on the victims and their families, who are understandably still in shock following this distressing incident,” PERKESO said.

Checks also found that three of the injured individuals, who were maintenance contractors and canteen staff, were not registered with PERKESO, while the remaining victims were students.
“A thorough investigation will be carried out on the employers involved to determine why contributions were not made for the affected employees (excluding students). At the same time, PERKESO will refer the case to the relevant agencies to make sure all victims receive the appropriate support,” the statement added.
