Instant noodles have a reputation for being bad for our health due to the excessive amounts of sodium they contain. However, that has not stopped people from consuming and loving it. Maybe this piece of news would?
Recently, the Ministry of Health (MoH) released a statement stating that ethylene oxide residues have been found in a few batches of the Indonesia-manufactured Mi Sedaap instant noodles.
The products involved are:
- Mi Sedaap Korean Spicy Chicken Instant Noodles with an expiry date of May 21, 2023
- Mi Sedaap Korean Spicy Soup Instant Noodles with an expiry date of March 17, 2023.
According to the Health Director General Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah, a review of the Food Safety Information System of Malaysia (FoSIM) data confirmed that Mi Sedaap Korean Spicy Soup Instant Noodles had been imported but did not involve the products with the above expiry dates.
He said the MoH will continue to monitor the market and conduct Hold, Test and Release (TUL) measures at all entry points of the country.
“MoH is always proactive and concerned about the things that can threaten the health of consumers,” said Dr Noor Hisham in a statement.
He explains that ethylene oxide is a pesticide that is not allowed to be used in food based on Food Regulations 1985.
He added that the substance is a chemical gas compound that is carcinogenic and is often used to carry out fumigation to eradicate pests such as insects.
While “there is no immediate risk to consumption of food contaminated with low levels of ethylene oxide, long term exposure may lead to health issues,” said the Singapore Food Agency that has taken actions to recall the products mentioned.
Back in August, the same pesticide was found in Haagen-Dazs ice cream products.
What a disappointment. How would we ever feel safe consuming these products again?
