Just yesterday, Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh received major backlash after she posted pictures of herself with Thailand’s men’s singles shuttler, Kunlavut Vitidsarn, who won the silver medal in the finals against Denmark’s Viktor Axelsen, after defeating Malaysia’s Lee Zii Jia in the semi-finals.
While a large majority of people called her ‘unpatriotic’ over her post, others pointed out that it was merely a show of sportsmanship.
Now, Hannah Yeoh is pushing back against those who condemned her, by sharing the Olympic values through a series of Instagram Stories.
Sportsmanship is the key word to remember!
Through her Instagram Stories, she explained that her post congratulating Kunlavut Vitidsarn was to show respect and friendship to the opponent, especially after the competition ended.
She also reminded people that she is not only the Sports Minister but also the Youth Minister, who plays a pivotal role in educating youngsters about ethics and building a “healthy sporting culture”.
“We are not sore losers. There is nothing insensitive about acknowledging our rival’s strength after the competition,”
“Young people, be brave to call out what is good. If you sit around fearing social media comments, you allow opportunities to display exemplary acts to slip by,” she said.
She then also showcased herself congratulating Malaysian coaches who are representing Japanese athletes.
“I am consistent about practicing good sportsmanship and I represent Malaysia. Be honorable even when we lose.”
What do you think about her comeback? Do feel free to share your thoughts in the comment section.
