Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) has successfully transformed several back alleys in the city centre into stunning, well-lit spaces adorned with striking murals and street art.
Sharing the update on their Facebook page, DBKL explained that these areas were revitalised under their Activation, Connection, and Rehabilitation of Back Alleys initiative. The project aims to elevate the “dignity” of previously marginalised and neglected urban spaces.

“Who would have thought that back alleys that were once gloomy, dirty, and often made people feel unsafe would today be transformed into cheerful, organised, and aesthetically pleasing pedestrian spaces?” DBKL wrote.
“This change did not happen by chance, but was born from the determination of DBKL to ensure that every inch of the city is given due attention and protection,” the city council added.

The revitalised locations are all areas steeped in historical value, including Lorong Bandar 13, Lorong Sisi Jalan Yap Ah Loy, and Lorong Petaling (Pasar Karat).
A focus on safety and infrastructure

The transformation goes beyond mere aesthetics. To create a safer and more pedestrian-friendly environment, DBKL has installed brighter street lighting and CCTV systems, alongside restructured drainage systems to improve cleanliness.

“This transformation is proof that DBKL is always listening, observing, and acting for the well-being of the people of Kuala Lumpur. Every stone arranged, every light installed, and every mural painted is a symbol of efforts that may not always be visible, but the benefits are felt by all,” the statement continued.
A shared responsibility
DBKL concluded by urging the public to play their part in maintaining these new urban gems.
“Let us, together, appreciate and preserve the cleanliness of these beautiful alleys. Today, these back alleys are no longer lonely spaces on the sidelines; they are a symbol of the new face of KL, full of colour, hope, and shared pride.”
