Last week, it was reported that a Malaysian child psychiatrist, 38-year-old Amirul Arif Bin Mohd Yunos, had been sentenced to 8 and a half years in prison for grooming and sexually abusing a teenage girl in Ireland.
Now, the parents of the now 17-year-old girl are sharing horrific details about what their daughter allegedly faced.
Based on a report by Irish Independent, the abuse by the psychiatrist started when the girl was only 14 years old, and one year later, he was allegedly already raping her and calling the abuse “biology lessons”. He apparently also sent her violent pornography to “study” for their upcoming session.
He told her no one would believe her
“He would tell her her body was a ‘form of payment’ for his therapy service. He said to her that he enjoyed seeing blossoming girls suffer in his hands as it made him feel more dominant and powerful. He threatened her that if she told people, no one would believe her because of his position in society,”
“She would ask him if it was rape, and he would say, ‘No, rape is violent‘. But, it was violent, it was rape. She was left bleeding sometimes. She has had to have medical procedures because of internal damage he did to her during rape. It was also escalating. We do not know how far he would have gone if she did not tell someone,” her mother shared.
Following the stress of the investigations and court case against the psychiatrist, the girl attempted suicide 3 times, leading her mother to attend court on behalf of her daughter to witness Yunos’s sentencing.
Yunos’ family wrote testimonials of good character for him
At one point, Yunos apparently attempted to offer the girl 2,000 Euros (RM9,305) as compensation before they went to court, though this was rejected by the girl’s parents who saw this as “the greatest insult“.
During last week’s court session, testimonials from Yunos’s family members, both from Malaysia and Ireland, were heard.
“He is from an influential family in Malaysia. We are disgusted by his family and others who wrote testimonials of good character for him. It’s scary to think of how much tolerance their people have towards such sadistic crimes against a child,” the girl’s mother added.
“He got her to a point where she felt he was the only one she could rely on and trust.”
Therapy with Yunos was supposed to be a one-time thing, but he had allegedly secretly contacted the girl to keep her coming back to him.
“We agreed he would meet her once to talk about her anxiety. My husband and I were present with our daughter for this. The therapy was not supposed to continue any further, but he contacted our daughter to arrange to see her without our knowledge and permission. He told her not to tell anyone,”
“She did not have a serious mental illness in the beginning, but as a consequence of what he went on to do, she developed serious severe depression, severe PTSD, anxiety flashbacks, ongoing self-harming and suicidal ideation. All because of him,” her mother explained.
The girl has also developed issues concerning food after Yunos had allegedly encouraged her to put on weight so that her breasts and other body parts would become fuller.
“She now believes she is unworthy of food. She’s lost a lot of weight. Our daughter doesn’t want to have a shape in case it attracts men. Also, if she doesn’t eat, she will feel dizzy and then she won’t remember the rapes as much.”
“She strongly believes that her life is not worth living anymore. We are so proud of her and her strength, resilience and courage. She might be a saviour of future child patients who could have been abused at his hands,” she added, emphasising that she and her husband are focused on their daughter’s recovery from this incident.
