In a recent update, a Firefly flight on its way to Penang was forced to return to Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah (SAAS) Airport in Subang after smoke filled the cabin.
New Straits Times reported that the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) said that the plane, registered as 9M-FYG, ran into problems that required it to return.
They experienced an issue shortly after taking off
CAAM’s CEO, Datuk Captain Norazman Mahmud, shared that an early report showed the flight had a problem with the extraction fan shortly after taking off.
He also mentioned that the pilot’s report (PIREP) pointed out that this fan issue caused the air-conditioning system to overheat, leading to smoke filling up the cabin.
A passenger managed to record the incident
One of the passengers, managed to capture the whole ordeal on video, showing smoke filling the cabin, and he shared his experience of the flight having to turn back just 15 minutes after taking off.
The caption of the post reads,
“My flight had to turn back to Subang just 15 minutes after takeoff because of a fire in one of the compartments on the plane. As a result, classes for flights 2208, 2205, and 2201 will be delayed.”
The flight might have additional problems
Norazman mentioned that there might be some additional problems with the flight that are still being investigated.
Luckily, there were no injuries reported, and everyone on board was safely evacuated to the terminal at SAAS Airport.
