In a modest ceremony held on June 28 in Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia, two individuals in their twilight years made a heartfelt commitment to each other, proving that love can bloom at any stage of life.
Md Sham Kassim, 81, a retired pediatric specialist and academic, and Azizah Alias, 77, a former government employee, exchanged vows in front of close family and friends. Their story traces back to their youth, when they first crossed paths as schoolmates more than five decades ago.

Though their early acquaintance didn’t evolve into a close friendship, life eventually led them down separate paths as Md Sham pursued his education abroad, and the two lost contact.
Years later, following the death of his wife, Md Sham felt compelled to reconnect with Azizah. With the help of a former student who turned out to be Azizah’s niece, he reached out.
“From there, our relationship rekindled. At first, my children were hesitant since my first wife recently passed on. I explained to them that at my age, I need to move on and I don’t want to delay my intentions.”

For Azizah, this marked her first experience as a bride. She reflected on her younger years, sharing that while she had suitors, she never felt ready to commit.
“I believed my soulmate would come one day. Back then I wasn’t sure. But everyone has their own soulmate.”
Despite living alone for many years, Azizah never felt burdened by solitude. Her belief in destiny remained strong, and she accepted Md Sham’s proposal with confidence that he was the right partner for her.
