The Employees Provident Fund (EPF) has prohibited 12,787 company directors from leaving the country due to unpaid employee contributions.
According to EPF, this affects 13,820 employers who failed to make the necessary payments within six months from January to June last year, accounting for 2.02% of the 685,399 employers registered with EPF.

EPF has also issued a warning that legal action will be taken against employers who do not comply with payment requirements.
“Failing to make payments within the specified period is a serious offence.”
“EPF will not hesitate to pursue legal action against non-compliant employers, including civil and criminal proceedings, to safeguard workers’ rights,” the statement read.

In 2022, EPF reported a similar crackdown on non-compliant employers, with 11,500 company directors barred from leaving the country due to unpaid contributions. This affected 12,900 employers, representing 1.9% of the registered employers.
Meanwhile, in 2021, the numbers were slightly lower, with 10,800 directors and 11,700 employers affected, accounting for 1.7% of registered employers.
