A few years ago, it was reported that a baby elephant, affectionately named Ellie, was discovered with a permanent disability to her right leg due to being caught in a wire snare left by irresponsible parties. A wire snare is a simple, passive trap consisting of a wire loop designed to catch animals, usually around the neck or leg, tightening when the animal moves.
“Ellie’s disability in her leg is proof that the use of these snares is very dangerous and causes serious injuries to wildlife.”

Back then, the Department of Wildlife and National Parks (PERHILITAN) had called for collaborations to produce prosthetic legs for Ellie.
How is Ellie doing now?
Now, PERHILITAN is thanking a company for having donated prosthetic legs to Ellie twice a year since 2024, with each prosthetic leg costing about RM30,000.

Taking to their Facebook page, they wrote, “PERHILITAN would like to express its gratitude to Deriv Services Sdn Bhd for sponsoring Ellie the elephant’s prosthetic legs since 2024. Ellie needs 2 prosthetic legs every year to ensure comfort, at a cost of around RM30,000 per leg.”
“This contribution is very meaningful in the effort to care for the welfare and conservation of the country’s wildlife. Together, we preserve. Together, we conserve.”

PERHILITAN also showcased an adorable video of their staff helping Ellie, who has clearly grown in size, into her latest prosthetic leg.
