We’ve all been told many a time to never leave our things unattended in any way. Even if you desperately need to use the bathroom, it’s always safer to just bring along your items, you know, just in case.
Dr.Siddique (@DrSiq_my) was at a food outlet in the Mytown Mall in Cheras when he decided to leave his laptop unattended for a quick minute to wash his hands. When he returned, his laptop was gone.
After getting the CCTV footage from the food outlet, Dr.Siddique took to Twitter to showcase the video in hopes of catching the thief, but little did he know that the video would start a very intense dispute among netizens.
Laptop kena curi kat
Mall Mytown Cheras. Dah report kat mall polis bantuan. Kalau kenal suspek tolong report polis @ohtweet @999Malaysia pic.twitter.com/5LkvHXF6HH— Dr.Siddique (@DrSid_my) June 27, 2019
The video shows a man lurking around the store front of the outlet, only to move towards Dr.Siddique’s table to swiftly grab his laptop before walking away.
He captioned, “Laptop got stolen. Mytown Mall, Cheras. I’ve made a report with the mall’s auxiliary police. If anyone recognises the suspect, please do report it to the police.”
The argument between netizens? Whose fault it is that the laptop got stolen.
Many took the thief’s side, generally saying that items left unattended are considered a free for all and that leaving your items unattended triggers other people to take it.
This comment reads, “It’s not considered theft, it’s his gain as the owner was careless.”
Other netizens on the other hand argued back, calling out those who are blaming the owner for decriminalising and justifying theft. After all, something that doesn’t belong to you IS NOT yours to take any way!
This comment goes, “We actually need to stop blaming the victim. Yes, he was careless. But the thief still took someone else’s belongings. What you are trying to say is that people should be allowed to rob your house even after you’ve locked up. Please do be more careful with your belongings in the future as slippers at the mosque can also be taken.”
People should definitely be more careful with their belongings. Also, theft is wrong. No ifs or buts.
