In an era where ALMOST nothing is free, we have to be prepared to pay for anything. Most online services have always been free, but rumor has it that Malaysian users will soon have to pay 8% Sales & Service Tax (SST) to use ChatGPT.
Do we really have to pay to subscribe to the AI service that has been aiding us a lot?
Just yesterday (October 31), Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil was quick to shut down the rumour and said the government has never thought about imposing a tax on ChatGPT users at the moment.
“So far, we have not discussed this matter, either in the Cabinet or among other ministers. There was no discussion on the proposal to impose a tax (ChatGPT),” he said during a Deepavali event in KL.
Fahmi also said any proposal to introduce a new tax should be brought to Parliament and not just discussed at the Cabinet level and not merely an immediate plan to be executed just like that.
The Communications Minister also said this matter was not raised by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim during the tabling of Budget 2025 and told Malaysians to “not entertain” this rumour about charging SST to ChatGPT users in Malaysia.
Earlier, the rumour circulated on social media, claiming that effective December 1, Malaysian users will have to pay 8% SST before they have full access to the open AI’s ChatGPT.
Do you think users should pay for such a service?
