Yesterday (31st July 2019), PKR (Parti Keadilan Rakyat) senator Mohd Imran Abd Hamid said something so outrageous that nearly all Malaysian were united in rejecting the very concept he put forward. Mohd Imran said that he wanted to propose a sexual harassment law in order to “protect” men from being “seduced” into committing serious crimes like rape.
The man wanted to suggest an act which will shield men from “the actions, words and clothing women” which, he believes, can coax and seduce men to commit crimes like incest, rape, molestation, watching porn, etc.
However, did you know that this isn’t the first time Imran has said something misogynistic and controversial?
In 2015, Cenbet vice-president Ng Yeen Seen said that Imran opined that “sexy dressing” of athletes in the Sukma Games and Fit Malaysia can lead to illicit sex (sex that is condemned by the law and religion). Therefore, since Imran is a “repeat offender”, Ng reckoned that PKR should acknowledge the issue and take the blame.
Ng said,
“Political parties have to accept some of the blame for endorsing those who are out of touch with society.”
“This particular politician made uncalled for remarks about the attire of athletes when he was a member of the Lower House in 2015, and yet he was appointed (a) senator.”
On top of that, she stressed that most rape cases don’t happen because of women’s “sexy dressing”. More often than not, it happens because the rapist wants to exert dominance over his poor victims. She is right!
In fact, many rape cases – that includes incest – are normally committed by predators who are close to the victims’ social circle. She finally said,
“So, Imran’s views do not hold water, are misogynistic and detached from reality. We cannot accept that the senator places the blame for rape, molestation, incest, porn and otherwise on the victim. In fact, it is the perpetrator who must take responsibility for their own action.”
Having said that, Imran has already issued an apology for the comment he made yesterday, but he insisted that he meant well. He has since retracted the statement and you can read about Imran’s apology in the article linked below.
