An international student from China is allegedly facing possible expulsion after wearing shorts to the Universiti Malaya’s (UM) library.
University of Malaya Association of New Youth (UMANY) took to their Instagram page, revealing how the said student, who was leaving the library, was allegedly yelled at by the security.
“UMANY won’t back down from supporting diversity.”
According to the statement, it was also revealed that the security guard filmed the entire incident and even withheld his identification.
“Even though he covered his legs with long sleeves when leaving, the security still treated him rudely. What’s worse is that they said they’d report the incident to his faculty, which could lead to him being expelled.”
UMANY acknowledged that while the student did break the university’s dress code, the main concern should be on the aggressive behaviour of the security staff instead.
“We should have the freedom to express ourselves”
UMANY also pointed out that UM’s strict and authoritarian dress code doesn’t match the high standards expected from one of Malaysia’s top universities.
They believe the real issue is that the dress code gives staff too much power to decide and enforce what counts as inappropriate attire.
“UMANY will keep fighting the dress code because we know that if students give in to the administration’s control, UM’s multicultural values will keep getting weakened.”
They also argued that if the administration truly wants to nurture critical thinkers, it needs to foster a free, open, and diverse campus.
