Spend within your means. A piece of financial advice that has saved a lot of souls from being stuck in waves of debt.
A Malaysian youth recently expressed his intention to buy a car that’s worth RM163,000. In a screenshot of conversations shared by an imported car dealer, Wan encountered a youth who earns a mere RM1,700 monthly but had an interest in buying an expensive car that was clearly out of his league.
The youth knew that very well, so he asked for a discount based on his budget.
“Can I have it for RM100,000 with 9 years of loan? I have a downpayment of RM6,000 ready if you agree,” the youth told Wan.
Wan politely declined, saying that such a huge “discount” (RM63,000) was impossible.
The youth was not happy with Wan’s decline, but still, he tried his best to remain polite.
“It’s okay if you reject this deal. I won’t be recommending you to my friends.”
Wan then explained to the youth that the discount was ridiculous and sarcastically told the youth,
“It’s alright. I can go crazy entertaining your friends if they have the same mindset as you.”
In his post, Wan stated that he rarely shared the conversation between himself and others until the youth challenged his patience. According to him, the youth would randomly leave negative comments on his posts and would also invite his peers to his charade.
Wan also urged the youth, particularly Gen Z, to manage their finances well and not go for something that is beyond their means if they cannot afford it.
To the sales advisor out there, how would you have handled the situation?
